The Panthers have landed a replacement for now Saint and former crying emoji, Ted Ginn Jr.
First reported by @RapSheet. The Panthers are signing WR Russell Shepard Jr. After a four year run with the Bucs, mostly as a special team ace, Shepard emerged as a WR. Last season he had career highs in every category and showed he can play WR in the NFL. One stat that that jumped off the page, 14.8yds per catch.
Bucs fans on Twitter are both sad to lose Shepard, and excited that he is going to get a chance to play WR. A particular salty Bucs fan, Kyle Foreman, was quoted, “Im glad he’s gone”. This tells me this guy may be a player.
If the Panthers can replace Ginn’s modest production, it will be a great signing. If he provides some value on special teams, it’s a bonus. It should be noted, Shepard is not expected to be used as a punt returner. He was primarily used on special teams coverage in Tampa.
Details of the deal were not immediately avialable, but I expect to be a 2-3yr deal worth $4m-5m per season.
