As first reported by Bill Voth of Black and Blue Review, Victor Cruz was in Charlotte today to meet with the Panthers. Cruz had a large cap hit coming up and was released last week by the Giants after seven mostly productive seasons in New York.
As we mentioned last week, Cruz could be a good addition to the Panthers receiver corps. After letting Jericho Cotchery walk after the Super Bowl, the Panthers lacked a salty veteran receiver in the room. Sure, Cruz has a significant injury history. But the Panthers don’t need him to be Victor Cruz of 2011. They need him to be Cotchery of 2015. Looking at their most recent stats, they are much closer than you may think. Cruz’s 2016 was a bit of a roller coasters, but coming of the severe patella injury, its to be expected. If he has a clean bill of health going in to 2017, there is no reason to shy away. The key is to have tempered expectations.
While I’m not sure this deal gets done today or at all. I have a pretty good feeling about Cruz still having something left in the tank, I hope we get to see it in Charlotte.
